| Character Development Barb Pearson, Meeker Middle School, Tacoma Is leadership measured on how fun the dance was or how much money you raised? Take kids beyond the" doing" and into the realm of "being" leaders in their schools. How do we move that direction and get started? How do we teach it, model it, practice it? In this clinic, delegates heard from an experienced adviser on how to teach the character and integrity of a leader and begin to measure not what you do, but how you do it. Ideas on how to use current materials like "7 Habits" were also shared. |

Frenzy of Ideas and Strategies! Susan Fortin, AWSP Student Leadership Leanne Donley, Central Valley High School, Spokane The right icebreaker. The perfect lunch. The best topics. All are considerations when you design your Interhigh plan for the year. This lively session allowed delegates to participate in activities and discussion focused on creating and sustaining a valuable Interhigh. Also discussed was the link between a local interhigh and the Washington Association of Student Councils. Whether looking to start a new Interhigh, give a boost to an existing one, or just learn more about this unique Washington state phenomenon, people left this session with ideas and inspiration. |

| Sharks in Shirts
and Ties: Leadership and The West Wing Tim Turner, Kiona-Benton High School, Benton City The West Wing has been one of the most highly acclaimed television shows of the past few years. Series creator Aaron Sorkin based the series on a simple premise: What would happen if, amid the dangerous shark-infested political waters of Washington, D.C., an honest, decent man was elected President of the United States? This session demonstrated one teacher's use of video clips from the political drama to illustrate a variety of leadership qualities and served as a springboard for discussion in a leadership class. |
